José Manuel Dapena March 2002

José Manuel Dapena at the Geenwood Centre

The Spanish guitarist José Manuel Dapena came to play for the society on Saturday 23rd March 2002. I'd spent the day sailing and was ready to hear beautiful music that evening. In this I was not disappointed.

José s playing was fluid and lively. I especially enjoyed the Sor Sonata in the first half whose elegance José captured with ease. This contrasted nicely with the more traditionally Spanish Albéniz Granada and Asturias, which made up the later part of the first half.

In the second half José played Manuel Ponce's Sanata Mexicana with great panache. This was followed by the wonderful five Bagatelles by Walton in celebration of Walton Centenary. The audience were spell bound by this gentleman of the guitar.

For the encore José played Terrega's Recordes de la Alhambra.
