Philip John Lee May 2002
Philip John Lee took us on a journey through Andalusia, demonstrating the regional styles of the various flamenco forms including; seguiriyas, soleares, alegrías, malagueñas, fandangos, zapateado, rondeña. The associated moods and celebrations were described with many amusing anecdotes from Philip John Lee's many years spent in Spain amongst the gypsies and traditional players.
He expanded on some of techniques and I was amazed at the variety of tremolo patterns used in flamenco. His playing was impeccable, it was wonderful to hear flemenco played in a virtuoso way without the reptition often encountered when hearing an accompaniment with a dance set. His performance included a sparkling rendition of Davy Grahame's "Angie" which he had played during his time in Spain as an example English style.
A most enjoyable evening!
